Gary Swanson was a high spirited, loving and conscientious volunteer who donated years of his life to the citizens of Eureka. Over the past 17 years, Gary donated more than 6,000 hours of dedication. From standing in the cold freezing at traffic collisions, to guarding crime scenes so patrol officers could get back to work. I met Gary as he walked around Henderson Center in uniform at the Christmas/Holiday kickoff event. Gary was in uniform with a huge smile handing out candy canes to kids. He warmly greeted the greenhorn Chief and his wife and we had a few good laughs.
Gary was the gregarious, friendly volunteer who helped make Eureka better. I have since found there are many Gary Swanson’s in Eureka. You may be one of them. You can join EPD’s volunteer team in honor of Gary Swanson. We have named a perpetual award after him…he would be proud. Rightfully so!
