EPD was directed to cut $1.2 M from its budget. Through negotiations with other department heads that figured was reduced to $ 834K. The $834K meant laying off 13 people (annuitants and PSO’s) and severing our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the county Animal Shelter.
Neither of those options sat well and several people reacted to walking away from the shelter and putting in kennels in Eureka. Cutting the money was not optional, just a fact.
During the budget hearings several council members voiced concern over severing the agreement with the county and the city having its own shelter. Hearing the concern City Manager Greg Sparks sharpened his pen and made cuts from his budget and others to find the money to fund the Animal Shelter. EPD is thankful to Council and Manager Sparks…and we are Dog Gone Happy. Enjoy the video.
